Insight Milwaukee was founded in 2024 by Bethany, a long-time meditator, in the Milwaukee area. Bethany has trained with and studied from many teachers in the Theravada tradition, including Ajahn Chah, Tara Brach, Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, and many more.
Bethany's style of meditation is very much grounded in the philosophy of: learn on the cushion, apply in the world. Buddhist practice is best when it is an applied skill that shows up in our relationships with others and self, how we move through the world, how we carry ourselves, how we consume, and all aspects of life!
Bethany is a yoga and meditation teacher at Healium Hot Yoga + Restore in Bay View, Milwaukee. She leads and hosts adventure travel retreats around the world. Bethany is highly active, preferring to apply her real-life learnings from practice when she is off the mat and immersed in the world - whether that is at home in Bay View, across the state, country, or world.
Our goal is to provide accessible offerings to the Milwaukee community and beyond. We believe that human thriving is possible. We believe in the power of collective healing through sangha, the benefits of practice for self and all sentient beings, and the power of individual conviction.
Our organization is mostly run on dana, a Pali word that is often translated to "generosity" or "gift from the heart." Specialty programming (retreats, trainings) are offered with varying costs structures to support those in need.
If you feel inspired to contribute to Insight Milwaukee, we welcome your contributions here.

What is Theravādan Buddhism?
Theravāda is a school of Buddhism that is often referred to as "school of the elders." It is commonly practiced in Southeast Asia. It emphasizes practice conviction through personal experience.
What is Vipassanā?
Vipassanā (often translated to "insight") is an ancient meditation technique that encourages the practitioner to continuously observe thoughts, emotions, sensations, and experience without judgement. In Bethany's experience, this practice leads to incredible insights and encourages a very real, truthful relationship with reality.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the foundation of our practice. Before we can gain insight, we need to be rooted in awareness and reality - just as it is. Thich Nhat Hanh says we are in a "serene relationship with reality" when we are mindful.
What is practice like?
We encourage meditation, focus, concentration, periods of retreat, sangha (community). See our Meditation page for more details on the format of weekly practice sessions.
Do I have to be Buddhist to practice or participate?
No! All faith practitioners and atheists are welcome.
